The Most Irritating Thing Ever....Dandruff!

Dandruff can be an annoying little thing. For some, it’s more than just a dry or itchy scalp. It can be all over their clothes, all through out their hair, and just down right embarrassing.

Dandruff, also known as pityriasis, is an excessive production and accumulation of skin cells. The skin cell begins to shed excessively at one time.

There are two types of dandruff; pityriasis capitis simplex, which is the most common form of dandruff, and pityriasis steatoides, which is a more severe case of dandruff. Pityriasis capitis simplex is a from of scalp irritation, large flakes, and itchy scalp. This kind of dandruff can still be attached to the scalp or scattered throughout your hair. Pityriasis steatoides is a collection of greasy or wax-like flakes with sebum that sticks to the scalp. When looking at it, it reminds you of cradle cap. If pityriasis steatoides looks irritated, it’ll be called seborrheic dermatitis.

Dandruff can come from many different things. It can come from (but not limited to); your diet, sensitivity to some hair care products or chemicals (relaxers, perms, color, etc.), vitamin deficiency in the body, stress, hormones, & sometimes hygiene. What makes dandruff pop up is highly debated.

It is helpful to ask your doctor for recommendations if your dandruff is out of control. Drinking lots of water and eating as healthy as you can may help out as well.

Shampooing once a week or every two weeks (depending on your hair) really helps to keep your dandruff in control and to prevent  any odor that can sometimes be associated with dandruff. Using medicated shampoos will help with decreasing dandruff. Also shampoos with tea tree and peppermint help to refresh the scalp and decrease dandruff.

Tea tree oil has natural healing properties in it, kill any fungus on the skin, and it unclogs your pores. Pepperment oil, like tea tree oil, stimulates your scalp, helps to keep lice away, and it helps to add shine while decreasing the likelihood of seeing dandruff.

Below I have listed a few home remedies for dandruff:
-apple cider vinegar mixed with water (equal parts). It kills bacteria and it cuts through oil.
-mixing peppermint and tea tree oil in your favorite conditioner.
-use a comb before shampooing to scratch your scalp and pick up the dandruff. While shampooing take a wide tooth comb and comb as your hair is under the water to get the flakes out.
-go see a doctor! You may not just have dandruff. You may have eczema and need medical attention before you see your stylist.
